Late but not last! Where to start…
Politics and the media would have us believe that all the good in the world is gone. It can be overwhelmingly depressing. In the work I do (and the life I try to lead), it is my quest to find what is good, no matter how small, and share it with people who may be interested. Apart from money, nothing connects us more than food and I know which I’d rather talk about!
Why this, why now?
I’ve always had to work hard getting my thoughts down on paper. My wife will tell you (through the use of her red pen) that I may not be the most naturally gifted of writers. But, just because we are a bit crap at something doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth having a go. Others will tell you, I am pretty determined and deeply care about doing a good job. So, hopefully, the latter rather than the former will transpire. At least you know I’m not a bot or a tech bro!
[Yes, yes, I’ll jump to it] So why am I here? Well, I’ve done a lot of things around food, I’ve been in the thick of it since I was a little girl. Over the years, I’ve tried to fix a lot of things that are a result of poor food in various jobs and through many projects over many years. Almost all the projects I have done in the last decade boil down to ‘people wanting more’ whether that be affordability, fairness, speed of change, sustainability, healthy etc etc. These are all hugely valid things and I endeavour to continue to deliver outcomes around these issues, but, many of these things are macro issues which can’t control and we lose ourselves sometimes in continually influencing or battling locked-in systems.
So, this blog seeks to shine a light on things which I see, through my professional and personal view, that are worth talking about. Good things. Things to be admired because they work, they deliver positive outcomes connected to food. It will also seek to keep me on the straight and narrow, prompting me to look to the light and not the dark and find balance in where I put my energy.
I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours
Apparently, according to Substack community it isn’t just about what I am doing, we are building a food and culture community. So, I commit to share what I see. I’d love to hear what you see, love and appreciate too – when you see something that moves you connected to food. This could be something simple like an amazing seasonal plate of food, intergenerational group growing food together, an appetising hospital meal or share a great chat you’ve had with a farmer. So many things. Food connects us all, it nourishes and restores through memories, experiences, stories and the act of sharing.
You’re in the diary
I’ll take my note book with me, sharing where I can. Driven by acts not algorithms.
